California test scores: Amid gains, proficiency lags and ethnic gap widens

California students’ scores on English and math rose from last year to this spring, newly released results show, with gains spanning gender, race, language and socioeconomic differences. But in the annual English and math state test scores for public-school students, only 49 percent in English and 37 percent in math scored proficient.
